Climate Leadership Fellows

It is the year that the United States will officially leave the Paris Agreement, and the year of perhaps the most consequential election of our lifetime. Given the recent surge in climate awareness and action across the U.S., 2020 is shaping up to be the Climate Election. We are pulling out all the stops to make sure that all of our leaders from every party hear loud and clear that we demand they take bold, faithful climate action or get out of the way for those who will.

Since 2014, YECA’s Climate Leadership Fellows program has trained dozens of young climate leaders to be effective activists, organizers, and advocates in their communities for just and compassionate climate action. This year, we’re doubling (actually quadrupling) down and growing our cohort by 400% in order to amplify the voices of young evangelicals across the country during this crucial year. We are seeking 30-35 Fellows this year to do the following work on their campuses, in their churches, and in their communities:

  • Educating peers on effective civic engagement and providing opportunities for action
  • Bird-dogging local candidates
  • Attending campaign rallies and town halls of local candidates
  • Hosting voter registration events
  • Leveraging voter turnout tools and implementing creative tactics to increasing voter engagement among their peers
  • Outreach to legislators after 2020 election to begin building relationships with congressional offices
  • Hosting meetings between legislators and peers to raise concern about climate action
  • Staging creative actions at congressional offices to generate media attention (i.e. office sit-ins, press conference outside congressional offices)
  • Writing op-eds, letters to the editor, school newspaper pieces, and other publications

Applications are now open and will be processed on a rolling basis. Successful candidates will be required to attend a mandatory week-long, all-expenses-paid training retreat in Washington, D.C. May 18-24, 2020.

  • Benefit from numerous resources and ongoing trainings, beginning with the all-expenses-paid training retreat May 18-24, 2020.

  • Meet internship or other academic credit requirements for graduation.

  • Get paid: Fellows receive a $1,000 stipend ($500/semester).

Expectations

  • Participate in the training/orientation retreat May 18-24, 2020.

  • Work with Y.E.C.A. staff and other Fellows in the cohort to develop and approve a plan and timeline for engaging your campus, church, and /or broader community in climate-focused civic engagement.

  • Identify a mentor who will serve as a local advisor for your project and provide support as needed.

  • Invest an average of 10 hours/week on Fellowship-related work.

  • Meet regularly with Y.E.C.A. staff and other Fellows via biweekly video calls, and connect as needed with your local advisor.

  • Submit a midyear and a final report at the end of your Fellowship
